A little gem of a coastal village far up in the north west, 45 miles (72km) from Inverness. It isn’t just a must-visit place, it’s quite difficult not to come across it as the road heading north up the west coast passes right through it. It is the only place on the north west coast with facilities such as a supermarket (Tesco), banks, post office, hardware shop, newsagent, hotels, pubs, restaurants, cafes and a fuel station. In fact, it’s surprisingly well equipped with most of the basic essentials. It is also the ferry terminal for the CalMac ferry to Stornoway on the Outer Hebrides. All in all, quite a busy place.
Our first visit to Ullapool was in 1977 and we stayed longer than expected as our car broke down there and we had to wait several days whilst it was repaired. That gave us a chance to explore the area on foot. We have stayed there many times since then and continue to get there most years. Not much has changed since our early days there except there is now a big Tesco supermarket and there are a few more cafes and restaurants. It still retains its remote charm.
