Sandwood Bay

This amazing place really deserves a website all to itself.

Our first visit to Sandwood Bay was in 1997 and we were so thrilled by the experience that we decided to find out more and have visited numerous times since.

The path to Sandwood Bay leaves from the carpark at Blairmore and heads across moorland for 4.5 miles (7km) to the bay. The path is generally good throughout the walk for anyone with reasonable mobility. The carpark is reached by leaving the main A838 road at Rhiconich and heading to Kinlochbervie and then on to Blairmore.

The bay and surrounding land is owned and managed by the John Muir Trust, a very active conservation charity set up in 1983, dedicated to the experience, protection and repair of wild places.  Their land includes Ben Nevis, Quinag (see Assynt page), Schiehallion, Helvellyn in the Lake District and many other wild places in the UK. Needless to say, we became members of the trust soon after our first visit and have supported them ever since. If you want to find out more then visit their website here –  www.johnmuirtrust.org. If you are as thrilled as we are with the bay you may like to consider membership and playing a part in their mission.
